We have, moreover, to remember the Cathari, the Paterini, the Fraticelli, the Albigenses, the Hussites heretics in whom the new light dimly shone, but who were instantly exterminated by the Church.

Many of these recalled other mediæval heretic sects, e.g. the Cathari, the Brothers and Sisters of the Spirit, the Bohemian Brethren, etc. For the first few years of its existence Anabaptism remained true to its original theologico-ethical principles. The doctrine of non-resistance was strictly adhered to.

"Hast thou ever heard of the Boni-Homines? They have other names Albigenses, Waldenses, Cathari, Men of the Valleys.

The advocates of the true religion at this time were the Waldenses, called by their adversaries in derision Leonists and Cathari, citizens of Lyons in France; and Puritans, a term of reproach heaped upon their successors till the present day. These people were deemed the most dangerous enemies to the church of Rome.

But their numbers were so few, comparatively, that the operations of the two witnesses were greatly limited; hence they are represented as being clothed in sackcloth, a symbol of melancholy and mourning. Among those who opposed the teachings of that apostate church were the Cathari, Poor Men of Lyons, Lombards, Albigenses, Waldenses, Vaudois, etc.

And we verily rejoice to be ranked with those Waldenses, of whom a popish historiographer speaketh thus: Alius in libris cathari dicuntur, quibus respondent qui hodie in Anglia puriorum doctrinam præ se ferunt.

Nowhere in European history do we read a more frightful story than that which tells of the blazing fires which consumed thousand after thousand of the most intelligent and thrifty people in France. It was now that the Holy Inquisition came into existence, and after forty years of slaughter these Albigensian Cathari or Puritans seemed exterminated.

From Armenia in the eighth century came the Manichaean sect of Paulicians into Thrace, and for twenty generations played a considerable part in the history of the Eastern Empire. In the Bulgarian tongue they were known as Bogomilians, or men constant in prayer. In Greek they were called Cathari, or "Puritans."

We do not find Rome interfering to save the people from oppression when the oppressor is a faithful and obedient son of Holy Church. Fresh heresies spread during this century, and we everywhere met with one corrective death. Most of them appear to have grown out of the old Manichæan heresy, and taught much of the old asceticism. The Cathari were hunted down and put to death throughout Italy.
