The oxide of manganese relieves the carbon plate of its hydrogen. The strength of the solution is maintained by spare crystals of sal-ammoniac lying on the bottom of the cell, which is closed to prevent evaporation, but has a venthole for the escape of gas. The Bichromate of Potash cell polarises more than the Leclanche, but yields a more powerful current for a short time.
Obtain a very small portion of the muscular coat of a cow's or a pig's stomach. Put it to soak in a solution of one dram of bichromate of potash in a pint of water. Take out a morsel on the slip of glass, and tease as directed for the voluntary muscle.
Thus, when immersing a plate sensitive to all radiations, visible and invisible, in a very dilute solution of nitric acid, bichromate of potash, or hydroxyl, it was shown that if the plate were exposed to light, first the parts acted upon by the red rays were reduced before the parts not acted upon at all by the spectrum, thus conclusively proving that light itself helped forward the oxidation or so-called solarization of the image.
Strychnine has a characteristic, very bitter taste; it imparts this taste to even very dilute solutions; it is unaffected by sulphuric acid, but gives a purple-blue colour, changing to crimson and light red, when the edge of this solution is touched with dioxide of manganese, potassium bichromate, ferricyanide of potassium, or permanganate of potassium.
In the second part they have investigated the action of bichromate solutions of various strengths on thin sheet-steel, about 0.098 inch thick, which was cold-rolled and contained: Carbon, 1.144 per cent.; silica, 0.166 per cent.; manganese, 0.104 per cent. Four solutions were used.
Since both solutions are approximately tenth-normal, 35 cc. of the bichromate solution may be added without testing. If a blue precipitate appears at once, 0.5 cc. of the bichromate solution may be added before testing again. The stirring rod which has touched the indicator should be dipped in distilled water before returning it to the iron solution.
If we desire to utilise the whole of the chromic acid in our mordanting liquor, we must add to it some sulphuric acid to set free the chromic acid from the potassium with which it is combined. The elements used may be bichromate of potash ones, those of Lelande and Chaperon, etc. To this apparatus there may be added a second bobbin of coarser wire into which is passed a current from a local pile.
