He has not made a picture, but merely put together a collection of original sketches; he has not built a temple, but only piled together the unfinished blocks of which it was to be composed. This is the great fault into which Barante, Sismondi, and Michelet have fallen.
The French ambassador, Barante, returning from Madrid, informed his sovereign that he had often seen officers in the army prostrating themselves on their knees in the streets before their sovereign as he went to mass, and imploring him for payment of their salaries, or at least an alms to keep them from starving, and always imploring in vain.

This leads directly to the neglect of criticism, and to the reproduction of whatever is effective from the literary point of view.
