Vietnam or Thailand ? Vote for the TOP Country of the Week !

In politics man has to make like things as well as to learn their significance. Political tactics would indeed be a much simpler matter if ballot-papers were a natural product, and if on beholding a ballot-paper at about the age of twenty-one a youth who had never heard of one before were invariably seized with a desire to vote.

It was otherwise with the charges that were to be made, according to the Mercury, on the evidence of Chief Joseph Fry and another member of his tribe, to the effect that he and his Conservative friends had been instructed by Squire Ormiston and Mr Murchison to vote on this occasion for both the candidates, thereby producing, when the box was opened, eleven ballot-papers inscribed with two crosses instead of one, and valueless.

In a ten-seat electorate a large proportion would pass through several transfers, and would towards the end of the count have such a ridiculously small fractional value that it would take several millions of the ballot-papers to make a single vote! It is no wonder that this method was abandoned when the complications to which it would lead were realized.

From the very outset the Compulsory Female Franchise produced little or no elation even in circles which had been loudest in demanding the vote. The bulk of the women of the country had been indifferent or hostile to the franchise agitation, and the most fanatical Suffragettes began to wonder what they had found so attractive in the prospect of putting ballot-papers into a box.

I expect we shall find Nick waiting for us," he added, with a smile. "Some business has delayed him, I have no doubt." She tried to smile in answer, but her lips quivered in spite of her. She turned her face aside, ashamed of her weakness. Noel came up with the ballot-papers, and emptied them out upon the table without a glance at her.

"Just finished, sir," came Noel's cheery answer. "I must just get a hat to hold the ballot-papers." He did not offer a paper to Olga, who still kept her place by Sir Reginald, her young face white and tired under the pile of fair, powdered hair. "I think I shall go when this is over," she whispered to Sir Reginald. "So you shall," he said kindly. "I will escort you myself.
