For in these older stigmatic flowers the anther as it comes down upon his back is seen to be withered, having shed its pollen several days since, the supply of pollen on the bee's body being sufficient to fertilize all the stigmas in the cluster, until a new supply is obtained from the pollen-bearing blossoms above. And thus he continues his rounds.

The anther with its pollen is the important thing; so there may be useful stamens with no filaments, but never useful stamens with no anthers. The amount of pollen in the flowers is always astonishing and interesting. Why should there be so much? That the bee gathers honey from the blossoms is one of the earliest things the child learns.

In the Sage-flower he finds an anther of the stamen which, pivoted on its spring, dusts him even more effectually. Bountifully to spread a table is much, but not enough, for without invitation how can hospitality be dispensed?

Now, when the bee puts her head into the tube to reach the honey, she passes right between these two swinging anthers, and knocking against the end pushes it before her and so brings the dust-bag plump down on her back, scattering the dust there! you can easily try this by thrusting a pencil into any Salvia flower, and you will see the anther fall.

Flowers sweetly scented, white, and in broad corymbs, the feathery appearance of the long, projecting stamens, each tipped with a golden anther, adding considerably to the beauty of the flowers. V. RETICULATUM and V. LAEVIGATUM are rarely seen species, but of interest botanically, if not for floral beauty. V. TINUS. Laurustinus. South Europe, 1596.

Here is an anther with its two cells connected lengthwise, and opening at the sides, perhaps balanced at the centre upon the top of its stalk or filament, or laterally attached and continuous with it; here is another opening by pores at the tip, and armed with two or four long horns; here is one with a feathery tail.

The anthers in this genus, then, are two, instead of the previous single anther with its two pollen-cells. The pollen is also quite different in its character, being here in the form of a pasty mass, whose entire exposed surface, as the anther opens, is coated with a very viscid gluten.

Surrounding the pistil are the stamens, few or many, the anther at the extremity containing the powdery pollen. Although these physiological features have been familiar to observers for thousands of years, the several functions involved were scarcely dreamed of until within a comparatively recent period.

Both sorts are to be found upon every spike of bloom, as the inflorescence begins at the base and proceeds upward. As we look into the more open flower we observe a dark-colored speck, which, by analysis, proves to be the lid of the anther. Below the flattened tip of the column, and at a sharp inward angle, is the stigma. The entrance is thus much narrowed.

"I remembered you right away," he said reproachfully; "I saw you in front of the house this morning, and you ran away." "I didn't runaway," replied Cynthia, indignantly. "It looked like it, to me," said Bob.. "I suppose you were afraid I was going to give you anther whistle." Cynthia bit her lip, and then she laughed.
