I was dreadfully jealous of any one who was a good scholar like myself, and to have any one above me in class annoyed me to such a degree that I could not play cheerfully with him. These occupied much of his time during the autumn and winter of 1862-63. The admiral had long desired to attack the defences of Mobile, and thus effectually check the blockade-running, which it was impossible wholly to prevent while that port was left unmolested. But it was not until August 5, 1864, that the assault was finally made.

Concerning the deterioration of the army, in certain particulars, see an article, "The War as we see it now," by John C. Ropes, Scribner's Magazine, June, 1891. Encouraged by the policy of the Administration, and especially by the precedent of Nevada, both Territories sought an enabling Act from Congress in the winter of 1862-63.
