It is no doubt, on account of its brevity that Boswell in speaking of it writes: 'What is called The Life. See Boswell's Hebrides, Oct, 29, 1773. See ante, under Feb. 7, 1775. See post, p. 139. See ante, i. 494. From Prior's imitation of Gualterus Danistonus ad Amicos; the poem mentioned by Boswell in his Hebrides, Aug. 18, 1773. Copy is manuscript for printing. To one of the petitions 'Mrs.

They are published in vol. xi. of Hawkins's edition of Johnson's Works. 1787, and are often quoted in my notes. It should be remembered that Steevens is not trustworthy. See ante, iii. 281, and iv. 178. See ante, ii. 96. See ante, p. iii. She Stoops to Conquer was first acted on March 15, 1773. The King of Sardinia had died on Feb. 20. Gent. Mag. 1773, pp. 149, 151.

Fletcher's "Checks," for if I did I should be of his mind." In January, 1773, a memorial letter was written to the Vicar of Madeley by John Wesley, asking him to become his successor as leader and head of the Methodist people. Indeed, the venerable Father of Methodism would have had his instant aid, for his letter concludes:

Lacy, joint patentee of Drury Lane with Mr. Garrick, in 1773, the whole management of that theatre devolved on Mr. Garrick. But in 1776, being about sixty years of age, he sold his share of the patent, and formed a resolution of quitting the stage.

Clement XIV., when solemnly pronouncing the dissolution of the order, at the time his celebrated bull, entitled "Dominus ac Redemptor Noster" which was signed July 21, 1773, was made public, justified his action in the following terms: "Recognizing that the members of this society have not a little troubled the Christian commonwealth, and that for the welfare of Christendom it were better that the order should disappear," etc.

Twice only, since the time of Fotherby, has any attempt been made to reach the pole on a north-east course. It was in this expedition that Nelson made his first voyage, and had that famous encounter with the bear.

At last I resolved on returning to Trieste, where I had more chances of serving and pleasing the State Inquisitors. I stayed at Gorice till the end of the year 1773, and passed an extremely pleasant six weeks. My adventure at Spessa had become public property. At first everybody addressed me on the subject, but as I laughed and treated the whole thing as a joke it would soon be forgotten.

Mead's time. Some credit for the new development should also be ascribed to Joseph Smith, who collected early-printed books and classics at Venice, while acting as English consul. His first library was purchased by George III. in 1762, and now forms the best part of the 'King's Library' at the British Museum. His later acquisitions were sold in 1773 by public auction in London.

* In his Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, published the year after Johnson died, Boswell gives a detailed account of Johnson's conversation and adventures with him throughout the journey of 1773.

"The principal object of the expedition is, to get money from Tanjore to pay the Nabob's debt: if a surplus, to be applied in discharge of the Nabob's debts to his private creditors." Letter from the Directors, March 17, 1769. Letter from the Nabob, May 1st, 1768; and ditto, 24th April, 1770, 1st October; ditto, 16th September, 1772, 16th March, 1773.
