Quoted by Hufeland, Van Wy mentions 1256 pounds of fluid being drawn from the abdomen of a woman in five years. Kaltschmid describes a case of ascites in which, in 12 paracenteses, 500 pounds of fluid were removed. In 1721 Morand reported two cases of ascites in one of which, by the means of 57 paracenteses, 970 pounds of fluid were drawn off in twenty-two months.

While Henry was seeking the Sicilian crown for his son, his brother Richard was elected to the German throne. In 1256 a demand of eight thousand marks was made, under pain of being transported, some at least of the most wealthy, to Ireland; and, lest they should withdraw their families into places of concealment, they were forbidden, under the penalty of outlawry and confiscation, to remove wife or child from their usual place of residence, for their wives and children were now liable to taxation as well as themselves.

Tokiyori, as already related, though he nominally resigned and entered religion in 1256, really held the reins of power until his death, in 1263. There were altogether nine of the Hojo regents, as shown below: Tokimasa 1203-1205 Yoshitoki 1205-1224 Yasutoki 1224-1242 Tsunetoki 1242-1246 Tokiyori 1246-1256 Retired in 1256, but ruled in camera till 1263 Tokimune 1256-1284
