But to me their voices bring a solemn, at times an eerie, charm, that I would gladly go miles to renew. Though much of the wolf-howling has been of little appeal, I have heard wolf concerts that held me spell-bound. On some occasions but always at night they lasted without scarcely any intermission for three or four hours.

The stars came out over a strange, silent, astonished, confounded, stupefied Ascalon that night. The wolf-howling of its revelry was stilled, the clamor of its obscene diversions was hushed. It was as if the sparkling tent of the heavens were a great bowl turned over the place, hushing its stridulous merriment, stifling its wild laughter and dry-throated feminine screams.

Hawks shrilled. From the far interior valleys came the echoed wolf-howling of Eskimo dogs. There the mountain tops, perpetually covered with ice and snow, gleamed through the clouds with running colors of amaranth, green and mottled gold. The air swam with frigid fire. As the tribe stood in silence along the shore, a roar as of gatling guns pealed from the mist-hidden heights.

Then it came to the ears of the humans, a murmur, dim with distance, but not invested with the soothing grace that is common to distant murmurs. Instead, it was in a high, wild key, a beat of shrill sound broken by shriller sounds the long wolf-howling of many wolf-dogs, a screaming of unrest and pain, mournful with hopelessness and rebellion.

The black night and short, hazy days, the monotonous food, the great white, wolf-howling distances, and the endless succession of one d hardship after another was quite enough.

After a round or so the music begins again and they cease fighting and again circle, dancing as before. The Chief calls out: "The Wolves are on their track." Now the howling of Wolves is heard in the distance, from the fellows already posted. The Caribou rush toward that side and face it in a row, threatening, with horns low, as they snort, stamp, and kick up the dust. The Wolf-howling ceases.
