Our national collection was without any example until 1896, when Mansueti's Symbolic representation of the Crucifixion was purchased. In 1905 the National Art-Collections Fund secured Bastiani's Virgin and Child, and in 1910 Sir Claude Phillips presented Diana's Christ Blessing. Alas! that we are still without anything from the hand of Vittore Carpaccio.

Vittore Pisanello and Jacopo Bellini had both of them visited Ferrara and painted portraits of the Este princes that of Leonello, with his long hooked nose and low forehead, is still preserved at Bergamo, and Piero de' Franceschi, the mighty Umbrian, is said to have supplied a design for Duke Borso's tomb.

"Every peasant brings his umbrella to the fair, to show that he has one!" "Except the brigands," added Vittore. "You can always tell a brigand because he never carries an umbrella." "Are there any brigands?" asked Dulcie anxiously. "Oh, yes!" replied Vittore, winking secretly at Ernesto. "There are quite a number still in the neighborhood."

"And the people aren't over gentle with strangers when their blood's up," added Vittore. "They've no use for a nice young Englishman down in Targia Vecchia! Best stay safe at home." Vittore, who had waited till his uncle was out of earshot, spoke tauntingly. Everard colored crimson. "I'm not afraid of a few Sicilian peasants!" he remarked.

Vittore Santado was executed near the Piazza del Popolo, and to this day, over the chimney-piece of many a Roman peasant, may be seen the tale of his crimes his confessions and his death; which perused by casual neighbour guests calls up many a sign of the cross and devout look of rustic terror.

An Entombment in the Church of S. Antonino at Venice is reminiscent of Giovanni Bellini at his best. In 1508, the name of VITTORE CARPACCIO occurs with that of Bastiani in connection with the frescoes of Giorgione upon the façade of the Fondaco de Tedeschi, about which there was a dispute.

It is no bigger than a billiard-room and unhappily very dark, with a wooden ceiling done in brown, gold, and blue; an altar with a blue and gold canopy; rich panels on the walls; and as a frieze a number of paintings by Vittore Carpaccio, which, in my opinion, transcend in interest the S. Ursula series at the Accademia. The story of the little precious room is this.

But now he found himself between the navy of Carlo Zeno in the Adriatic and the flotilla led by Vittore Pisani across the lagoon. It was in vain that the Republic of S. George strained every nerve to send him succour from the Ligurian sea; in vain that the lords of Padua kept opening communications with him from the mainland.

"Your property is back in your pocket with my sincere apologies," murmured Vittore, restoring the watch and other valuables. It was not until the next morning that Everard had an opportunity to give Carmel the peasant necklace for which he had ventured down to Targia Vecchia. Her delight was immense. "Why, it's the very one I wanted!" she exclaimed. "It will be the gem of my whole collection.

Dulcie and Douglas were responsible for Gaspare, Rosalia, and Nina, while Vittore, and Aimée, Claude, and Bertram went together. Carmel held Tito and Berta each by a hand, and Ernesto helped them all three into a boat. Everard was in the very act of jumping in after them, when Ernesto stopped him. "Excuse me, Signore, that is my place! There is plenty of room for you in the other boat."
