This ideal is instinctive, even on the part of animals, in fact, the animal instinctively regards its own preservation, its own unfoldment and the reaching of its ideal type. A tree will cover up its wound and reach out its branches freely, spontaneously in the direction of the light and toward the attainment of its own type. With man the ideal is a matter of higher realization.
It is absolutely necessary for the unfoldment of character that the child come into touch with other minds, and also into contact with things. Someone has summed up the whole principle in a sentence: "Bring such objects before the child as will stimulate spontaneous activity."
One-half minute of revolution of energy around the sensitive spinal cord of man effects subtle progress in his evolution; that half-minute of KRIYA equals one year of natural spiritual unfoldment. All men are thus affected by an inner and an outer universe. The ancient rishis discovered that man's earthly and heavenly environment, in twelve-year cycles, push him forward on his natural path.
Making this the fundamental principle of one's life, around which all others properly arrange and subordinate themselves, is not, as a casual observer might think, and as he sometimes suggests, an argument against one's own growth and development, against the highest possible unfoldment of his entire personality and powers.

They also teach that man, by the proper effort of the will, aided by favorable conditions, may aid in the unfoldment of these spiritual faculties, and develop them much sooner than in the ordinary process of evolution.
