As I see the corn grow green all about my neighbourhood, there rushes on me for no reason in particular a memory of the winter. I say "rushes," for that is the very word for the old sweeping lines of the ploughed fields. From some accidental turn of a train-journey or a walking tour, I saw suddenly the fierce rush of the furrows. The furrows are like arrows; they fly along an arc of sky.

The most difficult train-journey I remember is the twenty-hour trip from Lisbon to Sevilla, with a change of cars in the ghastly early morning at the border-town of Badajoz and another change at noon at the sun-baked, parched, and God-forsaken town of Merida; and yet I relish as red letters on my personal map of Spain a pleasant quarrel over the price of sandwiches at Badajoz and the way a muleteer of Merida flung a colored cloak over his shoulder and posed for an unconscious moment like a painting by Zuloaga.

'Ja, dies ist reizend, said Emil, sotto voce, exulting. He was very shy. But we were curiously happy, in that railway restaurant. Then we sat very still, on the platform, and waited for the train. It was like Italy, pleasant and social to wait in the railway station, all the world easy and warm in its activity, with the sun shining. I decided to take a franc's worth of train-journey.

During the brief train-journey the General slumbered. On mounting his horse, the General was compelled to work out a little sum. If one has four fingers there must be three inter-finger spaces, eh? Granted. Then how the devil are four reins to go into three places between four fingers, eh? Absurd idea, an' damsilly.

Or suppose something were to happen to him if he were to be killed upon the long train-journey? I was like a mother who has had a terrible dream about her child she must rush and fling her arms about the child. I realised that I wanted to see Sylvia! She had begged me to come; and I was worn out and had been urged by the office to take a rest.

Dimly she had come down to London with Birkin, London had been a vagueness, so had the train-journey to Dover. It was all like a sleep.
