In many places on these table-lands there are deep rifts called "canons," or more properly "barrancas," that have probably been formed by running water during rain-storms. These are often dry, and look like vast fissures opening down into the earth often for a thousand feet or more and extending away for scores of miles across the prairie.
The table-lands on either side of the Mississippi Valley, sloping from the Alleghanies and the Cordilleras, represent the more ancient type of plain which has already shared in the elevation which mountain-building brings about. In rarer cases plains of small area are formed where mountains formerly existed by the complete moving down of the original ridges.

Tibet consists of high table-lands without vegetation, with here and there snowy peaks and barren ravines, torrents fed by glaciers, depressions with glittering beds of salt, lakes surrounded by luxurious forests, with icy winds sweeping over all. The barometer indicated an altitude of thirteen thousand feet above the level of the sea.
