About twenty years ago, a Japanese forage plant, the Lesperadeza striata, whose seeds had been brought to the United States by some unknown accident made its appearance in one of the Southern States. It spread spontaneously in various directions, and in a few years was widely diffused.

The third fauna agrees with the Upper Silurian of the same author. These numbers have since been almost doubled by subsequent investigations in the same country. Fossils of the lowest Fossiliferous Beds in Bohemia, or "Primordial Zone" of Barrande. Paradoxides Bohemicus, Barr. Conocoryphe striata. Syn. Conocephalus striatus, Emmrich. One-half natural size. Agnostus integer, Beyrich.

This cortical or glandular substance constitutes the surface of the cerebrum, and also the surface of the corpora striata, from which proceeds the medulla oblongata; it also constitutes the middle of the cerebellum, and the middle of the spinal marrow.

To it belong not only the large hemispheres, but also the corpus callosum that unites them, the olfactory lobes, from which the olfactory nerves start, and most of the structures that are found at the roof and bottom of the large lateral ventricles inside the two hemispheres, such as the corpora striata.

The arguments in favor of the three ventricles of the brain have been, that those ventricles are the recipients of the animal spirits and of all the lymphs of the brain: the arguments in favor of the corpora striata have been, that these bodies constitute the marrow, through which the nerves are emitted, and by which each brain is continued into the spine; and from the spine and the marrow there is an emanation of fibres serving for the contexture of the whole body: the arguments in favor of the medullary substance of each brain have been, that this substance is a collection and congeries of all the fibres, which are the rudiments or beginnings of the whole man: the arguments in favor of the cortical substance have been, that in that substance are contained the prime and ultimate ends, and consequently the principles of all the fibres, and thereby of all the senses and motions: the arguments in favor of the dura mater have been, that it is the common covering of each brain, and hence by some kind of continuous principle extends itself over the heart and the viscera of the body.

Odonestis potatoria, sexual difference of colour in. Odour, correlation of, with colour of skin; of moths; emitted by snakes in the breeding season; of mammals. Oecanthus nivalis, difference of colour in the sexes of. Oecanthus pellucidus. Ogle, Dr. W., relation between colour and power of smell. Oidemia. Oliver, on sounds produced by Pimelia striata. Omaloplia brunnea, stridulation of.

The complication of the organ increases; cavities, termed ventricles, are formed, which do not exist in fishes, reptiles, or birds; curiously organized parts, such as the corpora striata, are added; it is now the brain of the mammalia. Its last and final change alone seems wanting, that which shall render it the brain of man." pp. 150-152.

It is the larva of Phryganea striata which has been best studied; those of neighbouring species evidently act much in the same way, with differences only in detail. The little carpenter stops a fragment rather longer than his own body, lies on it and brings it in contact with other pieces along his own sides. He thus obtains the skeleton of a cylinder.

A nest in my own neighbourhood provides me with a pretty Snail-shell, Helix striata, forming a rose-pattern in the middle of the mosaic. Ornamental shell-work appears to number its lovers among the insects.

It has been very generally admitted by conchologists that out of a hundred species of this tribe occurring fossil in the Upper Chalk one, and one only, Terebratulina striata, is still living, being thought to be identical with Terebratula caput-serpentis.
