It would be needful to go to work at once, for the process of salt-making by boiling in ordinary kettles is slow and tedious; not only must enough for present uses be found, but a supply to last the party home again was necessary. Accordingly, on the eighth of December the journal has this entry to show what was to be done:
Of these towns, few were as famous as Venice. Venice was a republic built upon a mud bank. Thither people from the mainland had fled during the invasions of the barbarians in the fourth century. Surrounded on all sides by the sea they had engaged in the business of salt-making. Salt had been very scarce during the Middle Ages, and the price had been high.
Pennypacker, they were ever prowling in the swamp for a bone bigger than any that they had found before. But the salt-making progressed rapidly. The kettles were always boiling and sack after sack was filled with the precious commodity.
The Shawnees scarcely had expected to achieve this feat. Once before he had been taken, but had escaped while his guards were drunk. He was a hard man to hold; now they were determined to keep him. They seemed to know that he and his men had gone out from Boonesborough, salt-making. That was why they had chosen this time for the attack.
