When I divide a whole which is given in intuition, I proceed from a conditioned to its conditions. The absolute totality of this series would be actually attained and given to the mind, if the regress could arrive at simple parts.
It follows that we are not required to answer the question respecting the absolute quantity of a series whether it is in itself limited or unlimited. We are only called upon to determine how far we must proceed in the empirical regress from condition to condition, in order to discover, in conformity with the rule of reason, a full and correct answer to the questions proposed by reason itself.
Such a view, however, leads at once to a vicious endless regress, since the relation of idea to object will have to be explained by supposing that the idea itself has an idea of the object, and so on ad infinitum. I therefore see no reason to believe that, when we are acquainted with an object, there is in us something which can be called the "idea" of the object.
This gave me not only egress and regress, as it were a back-way to my tent and to my storehouse, but gave me room to stow my goods.
Science, Industry, Government, might all claim progress on their own ground and in their own nature, but this would not prove progress as we understand the word, unless it could be shown further that these things contribute to human betterment in the highest sense of the word. Their progress might conceivably involve our regress.
It follows that we are unable to make any declaration respecting the cosmical quantity in itself not even that the regress in it is a regress in infinitum; we must only endeavour to attain to a conception of the quantity of the universe, in conformity with the rule which determines the empirical regress in it.
Once attained, progress however, will be dependent on the selection principle, and the hereditary percentage, or centgener power or breeding ability, must be determined in each generation anew. Without this the race would soon regress to its former condition. To return to our starting point, the comparison of artificial and natural selection.
The dream of unending progress is vain as the dream of unending regress. Critics of literature and philosophy have often remarked how sterile are the efforts to delineate a state of perfect and long-continued bliss, even when a Dante or a Milton undertakes the task, compared with delineations of torment and endless woe.
