We went on board the Ontonagon on the afternoon of the 22d September, 1851, on her return from Fond du Lac.
Just beyond its reach is Isle Royal; and in these two places there was plenty of copper, enough for the Indians, enough for the people who have come after them, and enough for a great many more. One piece of copper which the Indians did not pick up, and the United States Government did, is the famous Ontonagon Boulder, so called because it was found near the Ontonagon River.
The fine steamer that brought us to this point has gone, "Sailing out into the west, Out into the west, as the sun went down"; but no "weeping and wringing of hands" was there; we knew it must "come back to the town," that we are merely transient waifs cast upon this quiet beach, flitting birds of passage who have alighted in the porticos of the "Bigelow House," Ontonagon, Michigan.
This great mountain fortress extends from Marquette to Montreal River, beyond Ontonagon, the western boundary of the State of Michigan, in a line of about twelve to eighteen miles south of the lake, and often approaches two thousand feet in height, lifting its forest sides in constant view for more than two hundred miles.
A long, low flat-boat, without visible sails, steam-pipes, or oars, a narrow river-craft, with a box-like cabin at one end, the whole rude in its ensemble, and uncivilized in its details, is the object that meets the gaze of those who would curiously inspect the means by which the adventurous novelty-seeking portion of our party are to be conveyed up this Ontonagon river to the great copper-mines that form the inestimable wealth of that region.
She differs from the older models in having a straight stem instead of the "pig's nose." The iron traffic which has grown to such monster proportions, and created so noble a fleet of ships, began in 1856, when the steamer "Ontonagon" shipped two hundred and ninety-six tons of ore at Duluth.
