Alexander McWhorter, president of Queen's Museum College in Charlotte. Colonel Osborn was a man of fine character and wielded a strong influence in his day and generation. In the graveyard of Center Church, on a double headstone, are the following records: "Here lys the body of Col.
Alexander McWhorter, a distinguished Presbyterian minister from New Jersey, who had for a time the control of Queen's Museum in Charlotte. Soon after his marriage, Brevard also emigrated to North Carolina, and settled about two miles from Center Church, in Iredell county. Dr.
He now brought his intellect to bear upon "the Cardiff Giant," and soon produced an amazing theory, developing it at length in a careful article. See McWhorter, "Tammuz and the Mound-builders," in the "Galaxy," July, 1872. This theory was simply that the figure discovered at Cardiff was a Phenician idol; and Mr.
McWhorter was a very zealous Whig, and it is said the British were anxious to seize him on account of his independent addresses, both in and out of the pulpit. But they failed in their endeavors, and, after the invasion of Charlotte by Cornwallis in 1780, he returned to the North.

His son, John E. Caldwell, was one of the founders of the American Bible Society. McWhorter Street in Newark, New Jersey, is named in his honor. Four of his sons served in the Revolutionary war. Described as "a powerful preacher, a man of learning and wisdom, and a devout Christian." Walter Scott, another of the founders, was born in Moffat, Dumfriesshire.
Blythe, who, noticing his rapid advancement in learning, and capacity for more extended usefulness, advised him to go to Queen's Museum, in Charlotte. This institution was then in high repute under the able management of Dr. Alexander and Rev. Alexander McWhorter, a distinguished Presbyterian clergyman from New Jersey. Dr.
Judge McWhorter made about 25 addresses. Uncounted numbers of women throughout the State freely gave their time and work. About 1,500 meetings were arranged by the headquarters staff exclusive of those in charge of local women. In the summer a Men's Advisory Committee with Judge J. C. McWhorter as chairman was appointed by the State board; the State Educational Association in convention endorsed woman suffrage; and after an address by Mrs. Deborah Knox Livingston of Maine, who was on a tour of the State, the Methodist Episcopal Conference passed a favorable resolution.
