The Jacobin Club, directed by Robespierre, finally assumed all the functions of a council. There Maximilien proclaimed ``the idea of a Great Being who watches over oppressed innocence and who punishes triumphant crime. All the heretics who criticised the Jacobin orthodoxy were excommunicated that is, were sent to the Revolutionary Tribunal, which they left only for the scaffold.

The affair was hushed up, but is said to have made a deep impression on his mind. See D'Hericault, "Maximilien et le Mexique: Histoire des Derniers Mois de l'Empire du Mexique," pp. 29, 54.

The case was still proceeding when the tidings arrived: "The Convention, after a six-hours' session, has decreed Maximilien Robespierre accused, with him Couthon and Saint-Just; add Augustin Robespierre, and Lebas, who have demanded to share the lot of the accused. The five outlaws stand at the bar of the house."

For in this dreadful hour the baleful Jacques-Forget-Not remembers a private vengeance his followers need no second urging to haste with him to sack and slaughter.... Fox-like, Maximilien Robespierre, the "people's advocate," has watched from a safe recess the issue of the battle. Not for him, the risking of his precious skin!

Under a cloudless sky, Maximilien heads the procession of his colleagues in a blue coat and yellow breeches, carrying in his hand a bouquet of wheatears, cornflowers and poppies. He ascends the mountain and proclaims the God of Jean-Jacques to the Republic, which hears and weeps.

"To heel, Brount!" he called, "to heel!" and he plunged among the dark trees. Gamelin, out of respect, did not interrupt his lonely walk; but, as he gazed after the slender form disappearing in the darkness, he mentally addressed his hero in these impassioned words: "I have seen thy sadness, Maximilien; I have understood thy thought.

The Friend of the People was no more, and since his death Évariste had followed the lessons of Maximilien whose thought ruled the Jacobins, and thence, through a thousand affiliated societies was disseminated over all France.

Compare S. Basch, "Maximilien au Mexique," p. 296. The appointed hour passed, however, without being summoned to execution. After prolonged suspense, at four o'clock in the afternoon news arrived that a reprieve of three days had been granted by the president, in order that the condemned might make their last dispositions.

At last Maximilien has resolved to make appeal from the decree of the Convention to his own Section, the Section des Piques. The Council General sends for swords, pistols, muskets. But now the clash of arms, the trampling of feet and the shiver of broken glass fill the building.

Caron was in his dressing-gown when Robespierre was ushered into his study, and the sight of that greenish complexion and the small eyes, looking very angry and menacing, caused the song that the young man had been humming to fade on his lips. "You, Maximilien!" he exclaimed. "Your cordial welcome flatters me," sneered the Incorruptible, coming forward.
