Vietnam or Thailand ? Vote for the TOP Country of the Week !

There are no pilots until you are within the islands, and no longer want them, no lighthouses or beacons of any sort; and all that you have to go by is the shape of the hill-tops; but as, on the clearest day, the outlines of the mountains have about as much variety as the teeth of a saw, and as on a cloudy day, which happens about seven times a week, you see nothing but the line of their dark roots, the unfortunate mariner, who goes poking about for the narrow passage which is to lead him between the islands, at the BACK of one of which a pilot is waiting for him, will, in all probability, have already placed his vessel in a position to render that functionary's further attendance a work of supererogation.

Many a boat had perished on these cruel shores, even since lighthouses have been placed to warn the seamen from the most dangerous rocks.

A typhoon travels in a whirling spiral, you see, and the direction of a drifting ship depends wholly upon the locality where she sustained damage. The coasts of China, Java, Borneo, and the Philippines are not equipped with lighthouses on every headland and cordoned with telegraph wires. There are river pirates and savage races to be reckoned with.

I have never hesitated, therefore, when the state of the treasury would admit, to vote for reasonable appropriations, for breakwaters, lighthouses, piers, harbors, and similar public works, on any part of the whole Atlantic coast or the Gulf of Mexico, from Maine to Louisiana. But how stands the inland frontier? How is it along the vast lakes and the mighty rivers of the North and West?

Canals, lighthouses, railways, Government buildings, and other public works are the assets which Canada has to set against this debt, which represents the expenditure necessary for the development of a new and widely extended country. In education the Dominion ranks almost equal to the Northern States of America.

That may refer to the common trials of every life, but it is best taken as referring to the future judgment, when God 'will lay judgment to the line, and righteousness to the plummet'; and whatever cannot stand that test will be swept away. Who would run up a flimsy structure on some windy headland in northern seas? The lighthouses away out in ocean are firmly bonded into living rock.

The opinion was, ‘That lighthouses are marks and signs within the meaning of the statute and charter.

Well, it was in the year 1755, on the 2nd December, that one o' the keepers went to snuff the candles, for they only burned candles in the lighthouses at that time, and before that time great open grates with coal fires were the most common; but there were not many lights either of one kind or another in those days. On gettin' up to the lantern he found it was on fire.

To destroy this divergence, and to profit by all the light of the lamp, was the task to be accomplished, before lighthouses could be rendered useful to the full extent. The application to this purpose of deep metallic mirrors, known under the name of parabolic mirrors, has been found effectual to the purposes required.

Yet, as it respects optical effect, the feeble rays which were diffused from the wood or coal-fires at their summits, could never have traversed the thick fogs which in all climates occasionally overspread the lower regions of the atmosphere. Nevertheless, as to the strength of the light, the modern lighthouses were, until lately, little superior to the ancient.
