Wikstroemia indica. Macaranga tanarius. Blainvillea latifolia. With the exception of some of the grasses and two noxious weeds, this assemblage is representative of plants which grow just beyond the sweep of the waves, and are prosperously at home nowhere else.

In the South of England, however, it is quite hardy against a sunny wall. It grows 12 feet high, with shining green leathery leaves, and fragrant purplish-green flowers. H. latifolia angustifolia has decidedly narrower leaves than the species, but is in no other way different. HYDRANGEA ARBORESCENS. North America, 1736.

I was sorry that I had not examined them this day, but I satisfied myself in the same way as I had done before: to-morrow will do as well; the cook will not dress the pheasants to-day; old Hudson thinks them the, better for being kept two or three days. To-morrow came; but, as the leaves of the kalmia latifolia were out of my sight, they went out of my mind.

The flowering period commences in May, and usually extends to the end of July. This is a choice shrub of great hardihood, and one of the handsomest flowering in cultivation. There is a still more beautiful form named K. latifolia major splendens, and one with small Myrtle-like foliage named K. latifolia myrtifolia.

It has a delightful scent when in bloom, and is highly worthy the attention of amateurs of flower gardens. It should be planted in September, and will grow in almost any soil or situation. TYPHA latifolia. TYPHA angustifolia. TYPHA minor. These are all very fine aquatics, and worth a place in all pieces of water; the foliage forms a fine shelter for water-fowl. VIOLA tricolor.
