Diam. maj. 24, min. 21, alt. 16, mill. This snail strikingly resembles some Illyrian forms. It has affinities with H. coriaria, a species said to be from Ceylon. It was taken under stones and about roots of trees in Dunk Island, on the North-East coast of Australia. Helix franklandiensis. Tab. 2 fig. 2. a, b.

This handsome species is of a rich fulvous hue, with dark chestnut bands and a deep chestnut umbilicus, partly covered by the reflexion of the nearly black lip. It is allied to the H. incei, a well known north-east Australian species. It was found in hollow trees, and under logs and stones at Port Molle, in the same region. Helix macgillivrayi. Tab. 3 fig. 1.

This curious little snail, resembling a rolled-up Iulus, and reminding us of our own H. rotundata and its allies, was found under a stone at Port Molle. Helix inconspicua. Tab. 2 fig. 3. a, b, c.

After his great discovery, the Major constantly asked if I had found a specimen of Helix Vandaleuriana yet. It was a joke between us that new shell that I was to discover! I have an old letter open by me now, in which, writing of the Arkwrights, he says, "Your dear father's daughter could have no better home."

The jew-fish has the same distoma in its swimming bladder, which I observed in specimens caught in the Severn River to the southward of Moreton Bay: on examining the intestines of this fish, they were full of the shells of Limnaea and Cyclas. Large specimens of helix were frequent on the Vervain Plains, but they were only dead shells.

Among the shells we found a Helix of a brownish colour and of an oval form, approaching that of Bulimus. Whilst my companions returned to Brown's Lagoons, Mr. Calvert and Brown remained with me to examine the country.

The professor employs a helix connected with a battery, and surrounding a portion of the wire in circuit with the galvanometer. The current in the helix magnetizes the circuit wire inclosed, and the galvanometer exhibits the presence of electricity. The experiment helps to prove that magnetism is connected with some molecular change of the magnetized metal. By Dr. C. WILLIAM SIEMENS, F.R.S, Mem.

In the manufacture of one of these vessels, which are good examples of the helix or spirally-coiled type of basket, the beginning was made at the center of the bottom.

The use of a core of soft iron, magnetized by the passage of a current through a helix of wire wrapping it as the thread does a spool, is the indispensable feature, in some form meaning the same thing, with the same results, in all machines that are given movement to by an electric current. This is the electro-magnet.
