The peculiar features of our present St. Mark are known to be extremely few, yet several of these are also found in the Clementine Homilies. Matt. xxii. 32. Mark xii. 27. Luke xx. 38. Clem. Hom. iii. 55. In the introduction to the Eschatological discourse the Clementines approach more nearly to St. But there are two stronger cases than these.

Finally, we have still another eschatological conclusion to mention and reject; a conclusion which is drawn from this theory by the advocates of the evolution theory. It opens the perspective into a future development of still higher beings out of man.

This doctrine of the return, mentioned neither in the Qoran nor in the eschatological tradition of later times, according to Casanova was afterwards changed again into the expectation of the Mahdi, the last of Mohammed's deputies, "a Guided of God," who shall be descended from Mohammed, bear his name, resemble him in appearance, and who shall fill the world once more before its end with justice, as it is now filled with injustice and tyranny.

Even, therefore, if we can say that at the present day the gods are entirely spiritual, it is clearly possible to maintain that they have been spiritualized pari passu with the increasing importance of the animistic view of nature and of the greater prominence of eschatological beliefs. I mean the Mohammedan schools and sects, and the Karaite discussions which were closely modelled after them. The most important part of his system philosophically is that which deals with creation and the attributes of God.

The main problems here are the nature of good and evil and the relation of God to them, the question of free will and other subordinate topics, theological and eschatological. With regard to the first question two extreme positions are possible, which were actually held by Mohammedan schools of Al-Basir's day.

Or they may unjustifiably try, from our experiences in this world, to forbid glances which religion permits us to throw beyond the present course of the world; e.g., the eschatological hope of Christians is often enough contested, or as the laws of nature are called eternal in the absolute sense of the word, although natural science is only led to a recognition of the duration of the same, which is congruent with the circumstances and duration of this present course of the world.
