Lizzie could not control her laughter when he said "parcel." "Ow!" she giggled. "Ow, dear, ow, dear! A parcel! Ow, yes, it's a parcel all right! You'll see when you get up!..." He began to mount the stairs. "You're an awful fool, Lizzie," he said crossly, leaning over the banisters. "Losin' your temper, eih?" she replied, bolting the street door.

Gourlay turned his head to listen, but no further sound came from the yard. He walked to the green gate, his slippers making no noise. "Are ye sleeping, my pretty men?" he said softly.... "Eih?" The "Eih" leapt like a sword, with a slicing sharpness in its tone that made it a sinister contrast to the first sweet question to his "pretty men."

He staggered off the pavement, and went half way across the deserted street. Then he turned and looked at them for a few moments. "Ain't it a bloody treat, eih?" he shouted to them. "Ain't it a bloody treat?" "Drunk," said Gilbert.

The animal wheeled in anger, but Gilmour ran to its head with most manful blasphemy, and led it to the stable door. The off hind leg was still unwashed. "Has the horse but the three legs?" said Gourlay suavely. Gilmour brought the horse back to the trough, muttering sullenly. "Were ye saying anything?" said Gourlay. "Eih?"
