With the exception of Cudworth, Whichcot, and Minshull, it will have been noted, all the newly-appointed Masters were members of the Westminster Assembly, and leading men among the Presbyterian majority of that body.
He died in 1704 at Gates, in Essex, at the house of Sir Francis Masham, whose wife was the daughter of Cudworth, the philosopher. Locke's chief work, An Essay concerning Human Understanding, which had been planned as early as 1670, was published in 1689-90, a short abstract of it having previously appeared in French in Le Clerc's Bibliothèque Universelle, 1688.

Ralph Cudworth, one of the greatest scholars of the latter part of the seventeenth century, said that they who denied the possibility of satanic intercourse "can hardly escape the suspicion of some hankering towards atheism."
In his 'History of his Own Time' he introduces Wilkins to his readers in very distinguished company, among the Latitudinarians Whichcote, Cudworth, Tillotson, Lloyd, and Stillingfleet, of whom he says that if such men had not appeared, of another stamp than their predecessors, "the Church had quite lost its esteem over the nation."
The transcendent intellectual and moral superiorities of this "Euclid of holiness," as Emerson calls him, with his "soliform eye and his boniform soul," the two quaint adjectives being from the mint of Cudworth, are fully dilated upon in the addition to the original article called "Plato: New Readings." Few readers will be satisfied with the Essay entitled "Swedenborg; or, the Mystic."
"When we have cashiered this self-will of ours, which did but shackle and confine our soules, our wills shall then become truly free, being widened and enlarged to the extent of God's own will." Cudworth, Sermon before the House of Commons, p. 21.
Shooting every day. In Cudworth covers killed 192 head. The following letter from M. Guizot refers to an incident which caused a tremendous sensation at the time, and judged by the later events may be considered as a portent of the downfall of the Empire.
To complicate matters still further, the name 'Deist' was loosely applied as a name of reproach to men who, in the widest sense of the term, do not come within its meaning. Thus Cudworth, Tillotson, Locke, and Samuel Clarke were stigmatised as Deists by their enemies. On the other hand, men were grouped under the category whose faith did not rise to the level of Deism.
