Yet these rude and ill digested compilations, filled with absurd anecdotes, fabricated speeches, fictitious crimes or virtues, and disfigured by numerous anachronisms, instead of being consigned to just contempt and speedy oblivion, have been pushed into notice by speculators, and have found zealous partisans and enthusiastic apologists.
He accordingly examined the formulas very carefully, and submitted them to to the judgment of other enlightened persons who were in his confidence. In these omens derived from the young of domestic animals, we are again overwhelmed at the mass of contingencies included by the priests in their compilations.
Of all its nobler forms history alone lingered on; but it lingered in compilations or extracts from past writers, such as make up the so-called works of Walsingham, in jejune monastic annals, or worthless popular compendiums.
