One of the conspicuous trees of the Hawaiian forests is the Kukui or candle-nut. Its pale green foliage gives the mountain sides sometimes a disagreeable look; though where it grows among the Ko trees, whose leaves are of a dark green, the contrast is not unpleasant.

"Here we may actually, and not figuratively, indulge in the luxury of `reposing on the beds of flowers," said Max, throwing himself down at the foot of a towering candle-nut, amid a soft mass of this vegetable carpeting.

From its abundance I supposed the candle-nut might be made an article of export; but the country is so rough that the gathering of the nuts is very laborious; and several persons who have experimented in expressing the oil from the nut have discovered that it did not pay cost. Only two thousand pounds of Kukui nuts were exported in 1872. Sandal-wood was once a chief article of export.

Jack laughed, and patted Peterkin on the shoulder. "But tell us about the candle-nut tree," said I. "You were talking about it." "Very true," said Jack; "but I fear I can remember little about it. I believe the nut is about the size of a walnut; and I think that the leaves are white, but I am not sure." "Eh! ha! hum!" exclaimed Peterkin; "I saw a tree answering to that description this very day."

The juice of the raspings of the bark of trees, together with red clay, turmeric, and the soot of burnt candle-nut, furnished them with colouring matter and varnish, with which they daubed their native cloth in the form of squares, stripes, triangles, etc., but, with a few exceptions, perhaps, devoid of taste or regularity. Tutunga is the native name of the paper mulberry.

The beauties of the bottom of the sea tempt Peterkin to dive How he did it More difficulties overcome The water garden Curious creatures of the sea The tank Candles missed very much, and the candle-nut tree discovered Wonderful account of Peterkin's first voyage Cloth found growing on a tree A plan projected, and arms prepared for offence and defence A dreadful cry.

They dip it into a mixture of candle-nut ashes and water, and, tapping it with a little mallet, it sinks into the skin; and in this way they puncture the whole surface over which the tattooing extends.

The various shades of the masses of different kinds of foliage, with which these heights were clothed, from that of the pale-leaved candle-nut, to the sombre green of the bread-fruit groves, contributed greatly to the pleasing effect of the landscape. On the right, as you looked towards the ocean, lay the flat tract, occupied by the sea-fowl, and which Johnny had named after them.

I had known a man or two who had seen the queen at home, and who testified warmly to the harmonious blending of flesh color with the candle-nut soot. Among my effects in the House of the Golden Bed I had a photograph showing the multiplicity and fine execution of the designs upon Vaekehu's leg, yet comparing it with the two realities of Titihuti I could not yield the palm to the queen.

Into these punctures a preparation made from the kernel of the candle-nut, mixed with cocoa-nut oil, is rubbed, and the mark thus made is indelible.
