They say that the effluvium of C. campestris is abhorrent to snakes of all kinds, just as pyrethrum powder is to most insects, and even go so far as to describe its effect as fatal to them; according to this, the smell is therefore a protection to the deer.
On the pampas there is, strictly speaking, only one ruminant, the Cervus campestris, which is common. The most curious thing about this animal is that the male emits a rank, musky odour, so powerful that when the wind blows from it the effluvium comes in nauseating gusts to the nostrils from a distance exceeding two miles.
Of these the most remarkable is that near Tarsus, formed by the three streams of the Cydnus, the Sarus, and the Pyramus, which extends along the coast a distance of forty miles and reaches inland about thirty, the region which gave to the tract where it occurs the name of Cilicia Campestris or Pedias. The Persian dominion in this quarter was not bounded by sea.
Towards its southern boundaries the huanacu and the deer Cervus campestris in large herds range at large, while the pools and marshes are inhabited by enormous flocks of wild fowl of all descriptions.
Tragedies of this kind in the wild animal world have often been recorded, but they are exceedingly rare on the pampas, as the smooth few-pronged antlers of the native deer, corvus campestris, are not so liable to get hopelessly locked as in many other species.
And I've discovered such heaps and heaps of mushrooms over at the old Titchborne Ranch. They're thick all around the corral and in the pasture there. I am now what your English lord and master would call "a perfect seat" on Paddy, and every morning I ride over after my basketful of Agaricus Campestris that ought to be in the plural, but I've forgotten how!
Gruber, Dr., on the occurrence of the supra-condyloid foramen in the humerus of man; on division of malar bone; stridulation of locust; on ephippiger. Grus americanus, age of mature plumage in; breeding in immature plumage. Grus virgo, trachea of. Gryllus campestris, pugnacity of male. Gryllus domesticus. Grypus, sexual differences in the beak in. Guanacoes, battles of; canine teeth of.
I have had frequent opportunities of observing the young, from one to three days old, of the Cervus campestris the common deer of the pampas, and the perfection of its instincts at that tender age seem very wonderful in a ruminant.
The seeds or stones are supposed to give a disagreeable relish, and hence are generally directed to be taken out: nevertheless I have not found that they have any disagreeable taste. Lewis's Mat. Med. ULMUS campestris. ELM. Bark.
Of the indigenous mammalia, the only one now left of any size, which is common, is the Cervus campestris. This deer is exceedingly abundant, often in small herds, throughout the countries bordering the Plata and in Northern Patagonia. If a person crawling close along the ground, slowly advances towards a herd, the deer frequently, out of curiosity, approach to reconnoitre him.
