From Abel's lamb to the last lamb, which died before the true Lamb of God uttered the never to be forgotten words on the cross, "It is finished," the thousands of lambs and bulls and goats, the innumerable herds of animals slain, were all types of the one great sacrifice, brought on Calvary's cross.
A revelation they were! Nearly all poor like himself; nearly all having worked their way to the university: some from farms, some by teaching distant country or mountain schools; some by the peddling of books out of unknown byways, from the hedges and ditches of life, they had assembled: Calvary's regulars.
For organic unity we need not yet strive; it is enough that all the regiments and brigades in Christ's covenant hosts march to the same music, fight together under the same standard of Calvary's Cross, and press on, side by side, and shoulder to shoulder, to the final victory of righteousness and truth and human redemption.
A light shines from the Wilderness far up time's pathway streams Through death, and blood, and agony, on Calvary's cross it gleams; It lights with radiance divine Mount Vernon's humble tomb, And sparkles on Harmodius' sword bright flashing through the gloom. Ho! slaves of yesterday, arise, now will your chains be riven. Ho! tyrants, tremble, for behold a day of vengeance given.
"I love thee because thou hast first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree; I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow, If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now." "Dear Aunt Marthe," cried Evadne one afternoon, "what is love?" "I will answer you in the words of one who for years has lived the love-life," said Mrs. Everidge.
