Should Bridewell news be in any gazette? Swift. Scottish scoundrels! Swift. Scotch dogs! Into Scotland ... as far as a place called Dunce. Swift. "Dunce" underlined. Swift. Cursed Scots for ever! Swift. A cursed true Scot! Swift. Confounded Scots! Swift. All Argyles, cursed Scottish hell-hounds for ever! Swift. Scottish traitors!

Late in December some one in the War Office thought that we had given up too much ground about Fromelles and Armentieres, so an attack was ordered which resulted in nothing beyond the killing of a great many Highlanders, Gordons, Black Watch, Argyles, and virtually destroying a Brigade of Guards. But nothing came of all this, and it is, as I suppose as Rudyard Kipling would say, "another story."

But there was no great Cromwell among them; poor tremulous, hesitating, diplomatic Argyles and such like: none of them had a heart true enough for the truth, or durst commit himself to the truth.

He joined the Argyles in 1914, and was stationed in Edinburgh for some time. Then he was discharged on account of weak eyesight. But he immediately enlisted again; this time in the Lancashire Fusiliers. His home is Higher Broughton. His father, who is forty-nine, is a sergeant in the Manchesters at Salonica; I believe he said that he was wounded. It was about 10 p.m. when we got there.

Matters of gravity indeed; for Scotland, the prime mover in this business of Puritanism, has for leaders Argyles, Loudons, and others of the pedant species; no inspired Oliver. So these poor Scotch governors have tried getting Charles II. to adopt the Covenant as best he can have "compelled him to sign it voluntarily."

"Perhaps you are from the war, Sir?" she said with a wistful look on her face, and a strong Highland accent. "My husband is in one of the Highland Regiments, perhaps you have seen his battalion, the Argyles?" I replied in the negative, adding that I belonged to a Canadian Highland Regiment. "There are only two young men left in this village who have not gone to the war," she volunteered.
