The Argonautic expedition along the southern coast of the Black Sea was in its day an heroic undertaking.
From what was probably a maritime adventure that plundered some wealthy country at a period when navigation was in its infancy among the Greeks, we get the fable of the Argonautic Expedition.
It begins thus: "O haggard queen! to Athens dost thou guide Thy glowing chariot, steeped in kindred gore; Or seek to hide thy damned parricide Where peace and justice dwell for evermore?" One of the heroes of the Argonautic expedition was Meleager, son of OEneus and Althea, king and queen of Calydon.
"It's to be a sure enough 'exploraging' party," continued Katherine, "and we won't come back the same day." A cheer greeted her words. "Won't the war canoe look fine sweeping up the river?" asked Migwan, seeing the picture in her mind's eye. "This will be a bigger Argonautic Expedition than the other." "We won't be able to take this trip in the war canoe," spoke up Uncle Teddy.
He, more than any one Hayden could think of, might be of use to him in a certain Argonautic expedition he was adventuring upon. He decided to put it to the test, anyway. "So you, too, are interested in mines," he said, with an easy change of subject.
From this incident, Castor and Pollux came afterwards to be considered the patron deities of seamen and voyagers, and the lambent flames, which in certain states of the atmosphere play round the sails and masts of vessels, were called by their names. After the Argonautic expedition, we find Castor and Pollux engaged in a war with Idas and Lynceus.
"The Argonautic half of the Expedition came up to our expectations," said Migwan, as they floundered on, "but the Calydonian Hunt seems to be a wild goose chase." "Where do mooses stay when they are in the woods?" asked Hinpoha, falling over a root and pausing to rub her ankle. "On the ground," said the Captain, trying to be funny. "How very odd," said Hinpoha.
They were united by the warmest affection and inseparable in all their enterprises. They accompanied the Argonautic expedition. During the voyage a storm arose, and Orpheus prayed to the Samothracian gods, and played on his harp, whereupon the storm ceased and stars appeared on the heads of the brothers.
The traditional anecdotes relative to the Argonautic expedition are introduced with propriety, and embellished with the graces of poetical fiction. In describing scenes of tenderness, this author is happily pathetic, and in the heat of combat, proportionably animated. His similes present the imagination with beautiful imagery, and not only illustrate, but give additional force to the subject.
