Some work has been done along this line by Kroeber for the tribes of California, Lowie for the Crow Indians, and Junod for the Ekoi of West Africa; but it appears that the anthropological problem of basic beliefs and philosophies is dependent upon specific tribal studies and that more research is called for. =The Myth, Its Meaning and Function in Primitive Life=

Highly interesting exhibits were presented to view in the Anthropological Building, including instructive ethnological and archaeological collections. The handsome structures erected by the Foreign Nations as well as those built by the States and Territories of the Union, were designed particularly for the entertainment of those visitors who constituted their respective representatives.
Our author is apt to remonstrate with his anthropological critics, and to assure them that he also has made studies in ethnology. 'I am not such a despairer of ethnology as some ethnologists would have me. He refers us to the assistance which he lent in bringing out Dr. Hahn's Tsuni-Goam , Mr. Gill's Myths and Songs from the South Pacific , and probably other examples could be added.
Among historians of philosophy Thilo has given a rather one-sided representation of the Herbartian standpoint. Beneke, whom we have joined with Fries on account of his anthropological standpoint, stands about midway between Herbart and Schopenhauer.
Not very long ago it was reported to the Anthropological Society of Berlin that in excavating two tombs containing the remains of burnt bodies at Trupschutz, on the west of Brux, some fragments of skull were picked up, showing traces of trepanation. The edges of the wound in this case bad been healed, and the patient had lived on after the operation.
The whole theology was scrupulously collected from natives unacquainted with other races. The account of Andamanese religion does not tally with the anthropological hypothesis. Foreign influence seems to be more than usually excluded by insular conditions and the jealousy of the 'original inhabitants. The evidence ought to make us reflect on the extreme obscurity of the whole problem.
I was wont to think that 'scholar, as used by our learned author, meant 'philological mythologist, as distinguished from 'not-scholar, that is, 'anthropological mythologist. But now 'very thoughtful scholars, even Dr. Oldenberg, Mr. Rhys, Dr. Robertson Smith, and so on, use the anthropological method, so 'scholar' needs a fresh definition.
In 1890, at the time of the Scientific and Industrial Exhibition at Kazan, an appeal was made to the Tcheremis to send some objects of anthropological and ethnographical interest. They responded by sending those representing their religion, for, having rejected orthodoxy, they wished the beauties of their "new faith" to be admired.
Scientific knowledge, keen observation, or intuitive power of discrimination go far. To enlist our curiosity or enthusiasm or to excite our wonder are even stronger recommendations. Charm of personal manner, power of will, anthropological interest, self-effacement in view of some great objects all these qualities have made travel-books live.
