From those politically aggressive and therefore opposed Jesuit missions, which alone had worked in Anam up to this time, a persecuted bishop was about to find an asylum at Serampore, and to use its press and its purse for the publication of his Dictionarium Anamitico-Latinum. The French have long sought to seize an empire there.

The "Black Flags," a body of free-lances or pirates, whose leader had been one of the Chinese rebels, fought against the French; but it soon appeared that both the king of Anam and the government of China were in league with his hostile force. Two years later a treaty was signed bringing Tonkin almost directly under French rule and reestablishing the protectorate in Anam.

The sea rolled heavily, and the wind at intervals rose almost to a storm, but happily blew from the southwest, and thus aided the steamer's progress. The captain as often as possible put up his sails, and under the double action of steam and sail the vessel made rapid progress along the coast of Anam and Cochin China.

In 1874 the French Republic extorted from King Tuduc of Anam a treaty by which his foreign policy was placed under the direction of France. Against this treaty, China protested. In 1882 the French commander Riviere seized the city of Hanoi.

Kprukpru muquankpo ke ima | All thine iniquities who doth Enye adahado; | Most graciously forgive: Anam udoeno okure, | Who thy diseases all and pains Ye ndutukhoe fo. | Doth heal, and thee relieve.

Only one passage is quotable from these epigrams, which are entitled: IN PICTAVIAM, ANAM AULIGAM. "You may buy all that superficially makes a woman, but you can't buy that your lover wants; for he wants life, and you are dead."

This Cochin Chinese colony of theirs, which consists of the six ancient southern provinces of the empire of Anam, was ceded to France in 1874, but its European population is still under twelve thousand, exclusive of the garrison and the Government officials. The Government consists of a governor, aided by a privy council.
