We had a big day in London yesterday the anniversary of our entry into the war. I send you some newspaper clippings about it. The next best news is that we have a little actual sunshine a very rare thing and some of the weather is now almost decent.... Affectionately, W.H.P. All through the winter of 1917-1918 his associates at the Embassy had noticed a change for the worse in his health.

I believed in a break-through on the Western front, and during the winter of 1917-1918 lived in the hope that by such means we might break the obstinate love of destruction in our enemies.

Probably in the winter of 1917-1918 our troops will come into collision with them. But in the interval, also quite probably, Jemal the Great may resent German superintendence. But in addition to his ludicrous side, there is in him a refined hypocrisy and a subtle cruelty worthy of Abdul Hamid. One instance will suffice.

The most convenient summary of the organization of national resources is F. L. Paxson's "The American War Government," in The American Historical Review, October, 1920, which should be supplemented by the Handbook of Economic Agencies for the War of 1917, monograph No. 3 of the Historical Branch, War Plans Division, General Staff . The former contains many references in footnotes, of which the most important are the Report of the Chief of Staff and the Report of the Provost Marshal General . The published Investigation of the War Department, Hearing before the Committee on Military Affairs is invaluable The most complete information on ordnance is to be found in the report of General Benedict Crowell, America's Munitions, 1917-1918 ; it is an official defense and should be read critically.

Certain liberal American thinkers have taken the stand that the incidents of 1917-1918 were the result of the failure of the President, and of certain of his advisers, to follow the theories which he had enunciated, and to stand by the cause that he had espoused. These critics overlook the incidental character of the war as a factor in American domestic policy.

First published serially in The Yorkshire Weekly Post of 1917-1918. The enclosure of the common fields of England by hedge or wall, whereby the country has been changed from a land of open champaigns and large vistas to one of parterres and cattle-pens, constitutes a revolution in the social and economic life of the nation.

Some idea of the importance of chemical warfare in the campaigns of 1917-1918 can be obtained from the following figures: Allied Gas Statistics. Between November, 1917, and November, 1918, France produced more than five millions of her latest type of respirator. The British figure was probably higher.
