The greater percentage of fat as compared with muscle in women , if it is generally true, is what we should expect from a lower metabolism and a tendency to store materials. Even those which do not primarily concern the internal secretory system would be expected to work somewhat differently in the presence of unlike blood streams.
No matter how bad the news or how serious the danger, if they fail to worry us or to frighten us, in other words, to set up this complicated train of muscular and blood-supply changes, then they have little or no effect upon our digestions or the metabolism of our liver and kidneys.
The health of woman is, as we have seen, if possible even more important for the welfare of the race than that of man; and the influence of her body upon her mind is, in a sense, greater, so that its needs should be supreme and primary. Foods should favor the completest digestion, so that metabolism be on the highest plane.
It marks the period at which the metabolism can no longer support the strain of reproduction. A surplus of calcium brings on senility, as noted above. Withdrawal of the interests which centre in sex, together with the marked accompanying physical changes, involves a shift of mental attitude which is also frequently serious. Krugelstein and Lombroso, respectively, remark the same tendencies.
Neglected functions of the brain become released and give to the mind an energy and discipline and self-control and mastery of difficulties which restitutes the whole equilibrium, and with the equilibrium comes a new calmness and serenity which may react almost miraculously on the entire nervous system and through it on the whole organism and its metabolism.
Language is the nourishment of the thought of man, that serves only as it undergoes metabolism, and becomes thought and lives, and in its very living passes away. You scientific people, with your fancy of a terrible exactitude in language, of indestructible foundations built, as that Wordsworthian doggerel on the title-page of Nature says, "for aye," are marvellously without imagination!
The change is so gradual, and the renewal of that which is lost may be so exact, that no difference can be noticed except at long intervals of time. The entire series of chemical changes that take place in the living body, beginning with assimilation and ending with excretion, is included in one word, metabolism.
The nucleus controls, though it may not entirely carry on, the constructive metabolism. It is equally clear that the cell substance is the seat of most of the destructive processes which constitute vital action. The cell substance is irritable, and is endowed with the power of contractility. Cell fragments without nucleii are sensitive enough, and can move around as readily as normal cells.
At times, the cause being intangible, it may be necessary to change the whole life and metabolism of the patient, as so often necessary in hysteria, neurasthenia, gout, intestinal fermentation and kidney inefficiency.
With cardiac or general circulatory weakness, a laige amount of liquid to flush out the kidneys and the whole system, so long ordered for all kidney defects or mistakes in metabolism, is a seribus mistake. The Karel diet is described in the section on cardiovascular-renal disease.
