Let the architraves, coronae, and all the rest be developed, in proportion to the columns, from what has been written in the foregoing books.

The following will be the distinction between Corinthian and Egyptian oeci: the Corinthian have single tiers of columns, set either on a podium or on the ground, with architraves over them and coronae either of woodwork or of stucco, and carved vaulted ceilings above the coronae.

Further, the inside walls should be girdled, at a point halfway up their height, with coronae made of woodwork or of stucco. Without these, the voice of men engaged in discussion there will be carried up to the height above, and so be unintelligible to their listeners.

All the coronae were evidently produced by the fog; my shadow was impressed on the surface of the sea." The cause of these phenomena is "the reflection of the sun's rays, decomposed by different refractions in minute globules of water, of which the mist, wherein the coronae occur, in a great measure appears to consist." Mock suns, or parhelia, are common appearances in northern skies.

If the "scaena" is to have three stories, let the uppermost parapet be half the height of the intermediate one, the columns at the top one fourth less high than the intermediate, and the architraves and coronae of these columns one fifth of their height as before.

But M. Biot, who had himself had an opportunity of observing the aurora in the Shetland Isles in 1817, had already been led to recognize it as an atmospheric phenomenon, by the consideration that the arcs and the coronae of the aurora in no way participate in the apparent motion of the stars from east to west, a proof that they are drawn along by the rotation of the earth.

He gave the approximate period of revolution of some of these: Castor, 342 years; delta Serpentis, 375 years; gamma Leonis, 1,200 years; epsilon Bootis, 1,681 years. Twenty years later Sir John Herschel and Sir James South, after re-examination of these stars, confirmed and extended the results, one pair of Coronae having in the interval completed more than a whole revolution.

The coronae over the tympanum are to be made of equal size with the coronae under it, not including the simae. The acroteria at the corners have the height of the centre of the tympanum, and those in the middle are one eighth part higher than those at the corners.

Handsome brass coronae hung from the roof; the pulpit was like a doll's-house covered with little painted wooden cherubs and saints; a stand with three hour-glasses was hinged to the preacher's desk. Such sights as these may be seen in many a church in Sweden now, but what distinguished this one was an addition to the original building.

The day was bright and hazy at the time. Referring to a particular case of this kind, Scoresby says: "During the month of July 1820, the weather being often foggy, with a bright sun sometimes shining at the height of the day, some extraordinary coronae were observed from the mast-head.
