I believe there are some somewhere at the back of that ugly building which we call the National Gallery; and I think there have been some meetings lately in the East End, and an amateur concert at the Albert Hall, for restoring, by private subscriptions, some baths and wash-houses in Bethnal Green, which had fallen to decay.
Another wide field of usefulness is open to the employers in the establishment of schools, reading-rooms, baths, wash-houses, and the like. It strikes us that the writer of this article is not true to his own principle in his view of the duties of the employer. We readily grant the duty of making his business prosperous and his workshops healthy.

Meanwhile a candle-end does well enough for a room only a hundred feet long. There are numerous other adjuncts to our comfort wash-houses, for instance. These will be invaluable, when the water is laid on.
The Six Companies having made a regulation in regard to the wash-houses, that there should be at least fifteen houses between every two of them, one of the washmen was notified that he must give up his business, there being only fourteen houses between his and the next establishment. Although the Six Companies' directions are absolute law, he had no idea of doing this.

A fair was held at the Yorkshire Stingo on May 1 for many years. Close by are the St. Marylebone Public Baths and Wash-houses, which claim the honour of having been the first of the kind in the Metropolis. The St. Marylebone County Court adjoins. This was erected in 1874-75, when the need for further accommodation than that afforded by the old Court House was felt.
The prisoners go in parties to bathe in the sea near the camp, under guard of British soldiers. The prisoners do their own washing, numerous wash-houses being provided for the purpose. The latrines are partly on the English and partly on the Turkish system, 1 to every 10 men, cleanly kept. They are disinfected daily.
