The Zeppelins kept up a running fight with pursuing aeroplanes while dropping bombs. They sailed across Mt. Valérien, one of the most powerful Paris forts, dropping missiles which did little harm. A searchlight from the Eiffel Tower kept them in full view. They were forced to move rapidly.
Three heavy columns were marching along the roads which converged at the Bridge of Neuilly. Here Cuthbert expected a desperate struggle, but a few shots only were fired, and then a small body of troops covered by a party of skirmishers, retired up the hill, and then turning off made their way towards Fort Valerien.
The disjointed masses of Communists wind out on April 3d of the terrible year of '71, to storm the fortified heights held by the Nationalists. Only a day before, at Courbevoie, their bayonets have crossed in fight. Mont Valerien now showers shells into Paris.
The hills outside the city form a sort of amphitheatre, in which are situated the towns of Sèvres and Meudon. To the right of the river is Mont Valérien and the batteries in the Bois de Boulogne; to the left the Fort of Issy. The noise of the cannonade was very loud; but very little could be seen, owing to the sun shining on the hills outside.
Honoré, came out upon the Boulevard and took possession of the Madeleine and the Grand Opera House. While these operations had been carried on the Communists, batteries on Montmartre had thrown shells over the whole area occupied by the troops, while Mont Valerien and the other batteries facing the western side maintained a heavy fire upon those of Montmartre.
Louder than the music, heard above the clamour of the cheering, sounded the thunder of the French cannon from Mont Valerien, the Ave Caesar from the reluctant lips of worsted France. Bismarck, impassive as he seemed, must have had his emotions as he quitted this scene of triumph for the banquet-table of the Kaiser of his own making.
The cellular vans, in which convicts are conveyed to prison, were brought up. In these vehicles were shut up the men who had served and honored their country, and they were conveyed like three bands of criminals, some to the fortress of Mont Valerien, some to the prison Mazas in Paris, and the remainder to Vincennes.
I am very glad to see you." Then, after listening a moment: "Why, what is that noise?" he asked. Garneret told him it was Mont Valérien firing on the fortifications. The Commune was in full swing. "Vive la Commune!" cried Jean Servien, and he dropped his head back on the pillow with a smile. He was recovered and, with a book in his hand, was talking a quiet walk in the Luxembourg gardens.
I could never have believed that a castle as shattered on the outside, the front of which showed nothing but cracked walls and dark windows, was as habitable in some of its inner parts. My first care was to know where I was. Our rooms looked on the fields, the view from them embraced the marshy slopes of the Seine, extending up to the Calvary of Mont Valerien.
The Commandant of Mount Valérien appeared under the archway of the fort to receive the Representative prisoners. He at first made some show of registering them in the jailer's book. General Oudinot, under whom he had served, rebuked him severely, "Do you know me?" "Yes, General." "Well then, let that suffice. Ask no more." "Yes," said Tamisier. "Ask more and salute.
