A third method was, to add together the respective infusions, and the solutions of the sulphate of iron, in a very diluted state, by which I was enabled to form a more correct comparison of the quantity, and of the state of the colouring matter, and of the degree of its solubility.

In the primitive mountains open to our researches, real grottoes, those which have some extent, belong only to calcareous formations, such as the carbonate or sulphate of lime. The solubility of these substances appears to have favoured the action of the subterranean waters for ages.

In explaining those appearances of degraded mountains variously shaped, the fact we are now to reason upon is this; first, that in the consolidated earth we find great inequality in the resisting powers of the various consolidated bodies, both from the different degrees of consolidation which had taken place among them, and the different degrees of solubility which is found in the consolidated substances; and, secondly, that we find great diversity in the size, form, and positions of those most durable bodies which, by resisting longer the effects of the wearing operations of the surface, must determine the shape of the remaining mass.

Salts of radium have in general the same chemical properties as the corresponding salts of barium, but are distinguished from them by the differences of solubility which allow of their separation, and by their enormous activity, which is about a hundred thousand times greater than that of uranium. Radium produces various chemical and some very intense physiological reactions.

Brukner regards the red color as resulting from a mixture of erythrodextrin, and the greater solubility of this substance in water.

Heat, the digestive fire in the stomach, light that discovers all things, the warmth that is in the body, and eye counted as the fifth, are all of light which has form of diverse colours for its attribute. Liquefied discharges, solubility, and all kinds of liquid matter are of water. The tongue is the sense of taste, and taste is regarded as the attribute of water.

To effect this object, use is made of the solubility of nitrous fumes in strong vitriol. The vitriol dissolves the nitrogen oxides, and so-called "nitrous vitriol" flows out at the base of the tower.

The young animal, therefore, receives in the form of caseine, which is distinguished from fibrine and albumen by its great solubility, and by not coagulating when heated, the chief constituent of the mother's blood.

In fact, we have a method of recovering indigo from indigo-dyed woollen rags, based on the solubility of the wool in hot caustic soda. The wool dissolves, and the indigo, being insoluble, remains, and can be recovered. Soap and carbonate of ammonium have the least injurious action. Lime, in water or otherwise, acts injuriously, rendering the fibre brittle.

The solubility of the limestone by rain-water is well seen in the little blocks and peaks which rise thickly through the soil of the alluvial plains as you approach the mountains. They are all skittle-shaped, larger in the middle than at the base, the greatest diameter occurring at the height to which the country is flooded in the wet season, and thence decreasing regularly to the ground.
