"Very well then: the philosopher can tell us all about them before that." Lucien, thus appealed to, began: "There are few animals that have so many names as this. It is called in different districts, or by different authors, elk, round-horned elk, American elk, stag, red deer, grey moose, le biche, wapiti, and wewaskish.
In fact, he arrived before sun-up and, lying down in a little thicket close at hand, made himself very comfortable to wait for the opening of school. You see, not for anything would he have missed that lesson about his big cousins. There the others found him when they arrived. "The Deer family," began Old Mother Nature, "is divided into two branches the round-horned and the flat-horned.
For into this high road of the mastodon and the bison smaller pathways entered from each side, as lesser watercourses run into a river: the avenues of the round-horned elk, narrow, yet broad enough for the tossing of his lordly antlers; the trails of the countless migrating shuffling bear; the slender woodland alleys along which buck and doe and fawn had sought the springs or crept tenderly from their breeding coverts or fled like shadows in the race for life; the devious wolf-runs of the maddened packs as they had sprung to the kill; the threadlike passages of the stealthy fox; the tiny trickle of the squirrel, crossing, recrossing, without number; and ever close beside all these, unseen, the grass-path or the tree-path of the cougar.

I shall tell you.
It is called 'elk' because it was supposed by the early colonists to be the same as the elk of Europe. Its name of 'grey moose' is a hunter appellation, to distinguish it from the real moose, which the same hunters know as the 'black moose. 'Round-horned elk' is also a hunter name. 'Wewaskish, or 'waskesse, is an Indian name for the animal.
The round-horned elk, with spreading, massive antlers, the lordliest of the deer tribe throughout the world, abounded, and like the buffalo travelled in bands not only through the woods but also across the reaches of waving grass land. The deer were extraordinarily numerous, and so were bears, while wolves and panthers were plentiful.
I have told you about the round-horned Deer with the exception of the largest and noblest, Bugler the Elk. He is commonly called Elk, but his right name is Wapiti. "Bugler is found only in the great mountains of the Far West, but once, before hunters with terrible guns came, Elk were found in nearly all parts of this country excepting the Far South and the Far North even on the great plains.
Its name of `grey moose' is a hunter appellation, to distinguish it from the real moose, which the same hunters know as the `black moose. `Round-horned elk' is also a hunter name. `Wewaskish, or `waskesse, is an Indian name for the animal. `Stag' comes from the European deer so called, because this species somewhat resembles the stag; and `red deer' is a name used by the Hudson Bay traders. `Le biche' is another synonyme of French authors.
