Democedes shared the misfortunes of Polycrates and was taken prisoner by Oroetes.
In executing the plans which he thus formed, Oretes had not the courage and energy necessary for an open attack on Polycrates, and he consequently resolved on attempting to accomplish his end by treachery and stratagem. The plan which he devised was this: He sent a messenger to Polycrates with a letter of the following purport: "Oretes, governor of Sardis, to Polycrates of Samos.
A few days after I felt like Polycrates of Samos, that over-fortunate tyrant, when, walking myself in my garden, I descried and gathered up the rest of the same handle, the fractures fitting exactly. There are traces of Roman occupation hereabouts in mounds and earthworks.
He then led the army to Naucratis, which was the port of Saïs, and there he embarked on the Nile for Alexandria, and taking with him a further body of mercenaries, which Aristonicus had just brought from Greece, he entered the city in triumph. Ptolemy of Megalopolis, the new governor of Cyprus, copied his predecessor, Polycrates, in his wise and careful management.
It seems that in the midst of his prosperity, his friend and ally, the King of Egypt for these events, though narrated here, occurred before the invasion of Egypt by Cambyses sent to him a letter, of which the following is the purport. "Amasis, king of Egypt, to Polycrates.

There is a brief record in 1879 of a visit to us in Manchester-by-the- Sea. You will know then how I feel about my visit." He repeated also some English hexameters he had essayed from the first book of the Iliad.
He was finally called to Samos by the tyrant Polycrates, who reigned there from about 536 to 522 B.C. But on the death of Polycrates, who was murdered by the Persians, Democedes became a slave. His fame as a physician, however, had reached the ears of the Persian monarch, and shortly after his capture he was permitted to show his skill upon King Darius himself.
At last, when Polycrates went to Sardis, as is related in the last chapter, to receive the treasures of Oretes, and concert with him the plans for their proposed campaigns, Democedes accompanied him as usual; and when Polycrates was slain, and his attendants and followers were made captive by Oretes, the unfortunate physician was among the number.
Appease the anger of the Eumenides by a voluntary sacrifice, or deprive thyself of what thou most valuest among all that thou possessest." Polycrates obeyed, and drew from his finger a precious jewel, of immense value, dear to his heart, and threw it into the sea.
