I have done very well with these two qualities, since, from the son of a fisherman of Piscina, I have become prime minister to the king of France; and in that position your majesty will perhaps acknowledge I have rendered some service to the throne of your majesty.
There are two monuments of note: fine Jacobean tomb with canopy and effigies of Lord Chief-Justice Popham and wife ; defaced effigy of ecclesiastic in recess at E. end of N. chapel. The other features to be observed are old carved reading-desk and pulpit; very fine piscina in chancel; crucifix on mullion of E. window of S. chapel, now obscured by the organ.
There are both warm and cold plunge baths, besides a fine circular piscina, in a circular domed chamber. Similar provisions are made for the ladies on a smaller scale. Though plain and somewhat heavy in external design, the building internally is resplendent with tiles, marble, and ornamental woodwork.
The church, rebuilt 1860, is without interest, except for a very curious font of uncertain date, standing on a modern pedestal. Barrow, South, is a village 1 m. N. from Sparkford. The church, a small aisleless building, contains ancient bench ends; piscina and aumbry in sanctuary; brass to R. Morris on floor of nave. A fragment of Norman work will be noticed over the N. door.
In plan it is cruciform, the S. transept being under the tower, which is on the S. side, and is crowned by a small spire. The arches of the tower, chancel, and N. transept are probably Dec. The E. window is Dec., with the interior arch foliated. The rest are Perp. The nave roof deserves notice. The chancel contains a double piscina under a large foliated arch, and triple sedilia.
=The Sedilia.= The last bay on the south side is now occupied by three sedilia and a piscina, which form one block. As might be expected from the mediæval position of the altar, they once stood in the second bay from the east, and they were not removed to their present position until the last restoration.
Anne's Almshouse, one of the most interesting foundations in the city. It was originally a hermitage, but little is known about it until 1418, when it was "newly constructed", and in 1561 Oliver and George Mainwaring founded a hospital for eight poor people. The chapel is a small building that has retained its piscina and two niches for holding figures.
The six cusps of the moulding are ornamented by bosses of carved foliage. To the south side of the presbytery, between the south window and the Beaufort tomb, the triple #Sedilia# and the #Piscina# are situated: each of these is covered by a canopy of fourteenth-century work. These were extensively repaired at the time of the restoration.

The case, said the doctor, had been one of caries of the bones of the left heel, with a commencement of necrosis necessitating excision; and yet the frightful, suppurating sore had been healed in a minute at the first immersion in the piscina. "Tell the gentlemen how it happened, Sophie," he added. The little girl made her usual pretty gesture as a sign to everybody to be attentive.
