There are several species of this genus in South America, but none more beautiful than the "patawa." It is a palm with a straight smooth stem, and pinnate leaves the stem being sixty feet in height, and about a foot in diameter. The stem becomes smooth only in old trees.

I ride under the spreading limbs of the mahogany-tree, marking its oval pinnate leaves, and the egg-like seed capsules that hang from its branches; thinking as well of the brilliant surfaces that lie concealed within its dark and knotty trunk. Onward I ride, through glistening foliage and glowing flowers, that, under the beams of a tropic sun, present the varying hues of the rainbow.

It is an evergreen species, of comparative hardihood, and flowers well in sheltered situations. C. FLAMMULA. Virgin's Bower. France, 1596. This old and well-known plant is quite hardy in this country. The leaves are pinnate, and the flowers white and fragrant. C. Flammula rubro-marginata is a worthy and beautiful-leaved variety. C. FLORIDA. Japan, 1776.

The banks of the Cassiquiare are adorned with the chiriva palm-tree with pinnate leaves, silvery on the under part. The rest of the forest furnishes only trees with large, coriaceous, glossy leaves, that have plain edges.

Within the scrub there was a slight elevation, in which sandstone cropped out: it was covered with cypress-pine, and an Acacia, different from the Bricklow. Fusanus, a small tree with pinnate leaves, and Buttneria, a small shrub, were also found in these groves. Charley got a probably new species of bandicoot, with longer ears than the common one, and with white paws.

Its curiously and irregularly pinnate fronds are borne on slender stalks, terete toward the base, and covered with reddish brown, downy scales, instead of being produced loosely, as in most other Nephrolepises; these are densily crowded, and the outcome of closely clustered crowns.

It is one of those called "fan-palm" that is, the leaves, instead of being pinnate or feathery, have long naked stalks, at the end of which the leaflets spread out circularly, forming a shape like a fan. One of the murichi leaves is a grand sight.

The foliage of the ash is entirely different, as it has pinnate leaves, which means leaves arranged in two rows, one on each side of a common stem, or petiole, like What, Clara?" "Rose-leaves," was the prompt reply. "And leaves of the locust trees on the other side of the road," added Malcolm. "And the sumac," said their governess, "and a number of others that might be mentioned.

Numbers are of course less liable to changes, but the numbers of the rays of umbels, or ray-florets in the composites, of pairs of blades in pinnate leaves, and even of stamens and carpels are known to be often exceedingly variable. The smaller numbers however, are more constant, and deviations from the quinate structure of flowers are rare.
