It has sometimes been connected with the idealist thesis according to which the object of consciousness, being itself a modality of the consciousness, cannot exist apart from it that is to say, outside the periods in which it is perceived. In this case, it will be thought, there is no link of solidarity between the consciousness and its continuity. But I am not of that opinion.

First, it is impossible thus to measure the quanta of training needed so as rightly to assign to each its modicum and best modality of training. Indeed no method of doing this has ever been attempted, but the assessments have been arbitrary and conjectural, probably right in some and wrong in other respects, with no adequate criterion or test for either save only empirical experience.

We have, therefore, contented ourselves with a merely critical remark, leaving the subject to be explained in the sequel. Before concluding this fourth section, and at the same time the system of all principles of the pure understanding, it seems proper to mention the reasons which induced me to term the principles of modality postulates.

To put things together, and to put them or keep them asunder, will remain different operations, whatever tricks we may play with language. A remark of a similar nature may be applied to most of those distinctions among propositions which are said to have reference to their modality; as, difference of tense or time; the sun did rise, the sun is rising, the sun will rise.

The latter belongs to the principles of modality, which to the determination of causality adds the conception of necessity, which is itself, however, subject to a rule of the understanding.

She eliminates modality with a vengeance! 'Well, Selah, he said in his calmest and most deliberate manner, 'we must take a great many points into consideration before deciding on that matter. And then he went on to tell her what seemed to him the pros and cons of an immediate marriage. Couldn't she get a place meanwhile of some sort? Couldn't she let him have time to look about him?

Finally, under the fourth category modality it is 'necessary', being determined not by any objective criterion, but by the sensus communis of mankind, that is, their agreement in taste. For Kant, then, the whole matter of aesthetics is a subjective matter. He does not inquire what it is that makes objects beautiful, but how it is that we 'judge' them to be beautiful.

Therefore, not only self-consciousness and freedom, not only sensation and consciousness, but also life and the organic, remain a phenomenon which at least, according to the present state of our knowledge and reasoning enters into the realm of the world of phenomena as something new that can not be explained from the foregoing, although it presupposes the foregoing as the condition, not the cause, of its appearance; and no matter whether we have to think of the modality of its origin as a sudden or as a gradual one.

With the same right, accordingly, can we postulate the principles of modality, because they do not augment* the conception of a thing but merely indicate the manner in which it is connected with the faculty of cognition.
