They might just as well be explained by supposing that certain of the sitters were more psychic or mediumistic than the others, and these saw clairvoyantly or by some similar mode of psychic perception hands and forms invisible to those less sensitive.

She suffered greatly from nervousness. In order to bring about relief Dr. Ochorowicz hypnotized her, inducing somnambulism; and in this state she displayed, quite spontaneously, a number of "mediumistic" phenomena. This proved to be the beginning of her mediumship.

We gave no account of our experiences, but simply mentioned the fact that we had some interest in the investigation. Hearing this, and that we were going on to Denver next day, this lady gave me the address of a young married friend who lived in that city, and who had during the previous two years suddenly developed strong mediumistic power, but was in no way a professional.

The wonderful results of earlier spiritualism in America and in Europe were undoubtedly due to the casual and general practice of holding "home circles." These home circles were the nursery of some of the world's greatest mediums. Here the born medium was made aware of his or her natural powers; and, likewise, here others were enabled to gradually unfold and develop their latent mediumistic power.

Such undesirable mental states and atmospheres may be said to arise principally from two general causes, as follows: Desire on the part of the medium to produce sensational or brilliant results, and Doubt on the part of the medium concerning the genuineness and validity of the communications. Let us consider each of these in further detail. The Mediumistic Mind.

The horse readily reverses the figures of the solution; he replies, "37," for instance, instead of "73," which is a mediumistic phenomenon so well-known and so frequent that it has been styled "mirror-writing."

He says: 'The mediumistic limbs explored the cabinet. A spiritist would say: 'John King explored the cabinet. The synchronism he speaks of might exist, and only be a proof of what the spiritist admits that the presence and activity of the materializing spirit are closely circumscribed by the medium." "Bottazzi proved the relationship to be something more intimate than that.

The three chief difficulties involved in mediumistic messages may be summed-up under three headings: intra-mediumistic conditions; intra-cosmic conditions; and the mental conditions of the communicators. Under the first head may be placed all those difficulties which are liable to interfere between the communicator and the amanuensis.

PHYSICAL PHENOMENA cover a wide range of mediumistic manifestations, among which are movements of tables, the production of "raps," the manifestation of spirit lights, freedom from the effects of fire, the passage of matter through matter, direct writing upon paper or upon slates, direct voices, levitation of the medium, spirit photographs, and the production of the materialized form of the spirit.

In default of telepathy proper, I inclined toward the mediumistic or subliminal theory, which was very ably outlined by M. de Vesmes in a remarkable lecture delivered, on the 22nd of December, 1912, before the Societe Universelle d'Etudes Psychiques.
