Of William of Malmsbury of Simeon of Durham of Benedict of Peterborough of John Hanvill of St. Albans of " "Prithee, friend," cried the quarto in a testy tone, "how old do you think me?
The argument used on this occasion seems to be embodied in the question of Malmsbury and has since become familiar "What would Ireland do," says the old historian, "if the merchandize of England were not carried to her shores?"
Murkertach, according to Malmsbury, maintained a close correspondence with Henry I., for whose advice he professed great deference. He was accused of aiding the rebellion of the Montgomerys against that Prince; and if at one time he did so, seems to have abandoned their alliance, when threatened with reprisals on the Irish engaged in peaceful commerce with England.
Wahlstod, A.D. 731, the next Bishop, is referred to by both Florence of Worcester and William of Malmsbury, as well as Bede. We also hear of him in the writings of Cuthbert, who followed him in 736. Cuthbert relates in some verses that Wahlstod began the building of a great and magnificent cross, which he, Cuthbert, completed. Cuthbert died, A.D. 758, and was followed by Podda, A.D. 746.
Deficient himself in cultivation, but a giant in intellect, he devoted himself to study amid care, toil, and disease, mastered the Latin tongue, and if we may believe William of Malmsbury translated almost all that was known of Roman literature into Saxon.
He was first buried in his own monastery, but his remains were afterwards removed, and interred in Durham cathedral; and, being subsequently canonized, he was enrolled in the Romish calendar of saints. His character is thus drawn by William of Malmsbury: "He was a man, that, although born in the extreme corner of the world, yet the light of his learning spread over all parts of the earth.
Taking all these things into consideration, I decided I would go through the winter, at least, without fresh help. Mary Grant and Mrs. Malmsbury still remained at the cottage over the way. Often I asked Mary, almost in dread, if she were going away during the stormier months, but she always said she had not made any arrangements so far.
M. B. Clark was born in Malmsbury, England, September 6, 1827. From early boyhood until he was nearly of age he was employed in all the various occupations of an agricultural district.
We have every reason to believe we have the indirect testimony of every writer from Bede to Malmsbury that the intercourse between the Irish and Saxons, after the first hostility engendered by the cruel treatment of the Britons had worn away, became of the most friendly character.
"Nay," said Wamba, "never think I envy thee, brother Gurth; the serf sits by the hall-fire when the freeman must forth to the field of battle And what saith Oldhelm of Malmsbury Better a fool at a feast than a wise man at a fray."
