In Great Britain we have made great strides, particularly in the construction of small types, and our practical air experience in lighter-than-air craft, during the war, is the greatest in the world.

When that is done we may very well say that aerial transportation for passengers and freight is an accomplished fact. At the end of 108 hours and 12 minutes of sustained flight, more than four days, the British dirigible R-34 swung into Roosevelt Field, came to anchor, and finished the first flight of the Atlantic by a lighter-than-air airship.

On the fifth of June, 1783, the Montgolfiers' hot-air balloon rose at Versailles, and in its rising divided the study of the conquest of the air into two definite parts, the one being concerned with the propulsion of gas lifted, lighter-than-air vehicles, and the other being crystallised in one sentence by Sir George Cayley: 'The whole problem, he stated, 'is confined within these limits, viz.: to make a surface support a given weight by the application of power to the resistance of the air. For about ten years the balloon held the field entirely, being regarded as the only solution of the problem of flight that man could ever compass.

On a Sunday in August of 1918 there were assembled around his drafting-board an interested and receptive audience of four Peters, an ensign attached to the "lighter-than-air" section; Madden, a pilot on his way up from Italy to the Northern Bombing Group; Erskine, a lieutenant in the Operations Division; and Matthews, a chief yeoman.

His foot slid out from its precarious perch, pushing the boat farther into the lake. And the dignified officer flapped wildly in mid-air. Not being built on a lighter-than-air principle, he failed to hold this undignified aerial pose for more than the tenth of a second. At the end of that time he plunged splashingly into the lake, at a depth of something like eight feet of water.
