More than a month after the first great shock, when I was standing on a fallen tree up the Valley near Lamon's winter cabin, I heard a distinct bubbling thunder from the direction of Tenaya Canyon Carlo, a large intelligent St. Bernard dog standing beside me seemed greatly astonished, and looked intently in that direction with mouth open and uttered a low Wouf! as if saying, "What's that?"

Widely different was the training undergone for the leadership of the people by the Pericles of the American Republic from that undergone by the Pericles of Athens, or by any group of statesmen before him, Greek, Roman, or European. In this point of view, Mr. Lamon's book is a most valuable addition to the library of political science.

The first chapters of Lamon's book were purchased from Herndon; so Herndon is responsible for the whole. "Mrs. Lincoln told me herself all the circumstances of her engagement to Mr. Lincoln, of his illness, and the breaking off of her engagement, of the renewal, and her marriage. So I say I do not believe one word of this dishonorable story about Mr. Lincoln."

A search through the files of the leading New York dailies for several days immediately following the date of the speech, seems to confirm Lamon's remark all except the last clause above quoted. It is true that a day or two later Everett wrote him a letter of congratulation upon his success.

If we make generous allowance for the fears which had their root in Lamon's devoted love for his chief, and for that natural desire to magnify his office for his special charge was to guard the President from bodily harm which would incline him to estimate trifles seriously, we are still compelled to believe that the life was in frequent, if not continual, danger.
