The pebbles on which we sat were some of pitch, some of hard sandstone, but most of them of brick; pale, dark, yellow, lavender, spotted, clouded, and half a dozen more delicate hues; some coarse, some fine as Samian ware; the rocks themselves were composed of an almost glassy substance, strangely jumbled, even intercalated now and then with soft sand.
Limestones are rare in this series, but one band of 300 feet in thickness has been traced for considerable distances to the north of Lake Huron. Beds of greenstone are intercalated conformably with the quartzose and argillaceous members of this series. No organic remains have yet been found in any of the beds, which are about 18,000 feet thick, and rest unconformably on the Laurentian rocks.

Thus it is that where geologists find considerable fields of rock, where limestones are intercalated with sandstones and deposits of clay, they are justified in assuming that the strata were laid down near some ancient shore.

This is shown by a Babylonian calendar, fortunately preserved in great part, in which every day of the year is included, and either its character noted or some precautions prescribed.
Between the newer or Recent division of the stone period and the older division, which has been called the Pleistocene, there was evidently a vast interval of time a gap in the history of the past, into which many monuments of intermediate date will one day have to be intercalated.
