I look'd down. A yard below my feet the beam of the gallows gleam'd palely out of the darkness. Here was my chance. I let my hands slip down the last foot or so of rope, hung for a moment, then dropp'd for the beam. My feet miss'd it, as I intended they should; but I flung both arms out and caught it, bringing myself up with a jerk.
Herbert has well versified the portrait drawn by Priscus of the great enemy of both Byzantium and Rome: "Terrific was his semblance, in no mould Of beautiful proportion cast; his limbs Nothing exalted, but with sinews braced Of Chalybean temper, agile, lithe, And swifter than the roe; his ample chest Was overbrow'd by a gigantic head, With eyes keen, deeply sunk, and small, that gleam'd Strangely in wrath as though some spirit unclean Within that corporal tenement install'd Look'd from its windows, but with temper'd fire Beam'd mildly on the unresisting.
"He stood, how long he knew not, but it seem'd An age expectant, powerless, with his eyes Strain'd on the spot where first the figure gleam'd: Then by degrees recall'd his energies, And would have pass'd the whole off as a dream. But could not wake; he was, he did surmise, Waking already, and return'd at length Back to his chamber, shorn of half his strength."
"Move on, priest, and be silent," said the yeoman; "it were better you led the way to the place of rendezvous, than say what should be left unsaid, both in decency and prudence." Alas, how many hours and years have past, Since human forms have round this table sate, Or lamp, or taper, on its surface gleam'd!
I term'd her no goddess of love, I call'd not her beauty divine: These far other passions may prove, But they could not be figures of mine. It ne'er was apparel'd with art, On words it could never rely; It reign'd in the throb of my heart, It gleam'd in the glance of my eye.
